I don’t think I find anything as entertaining as musical comedy. The combination of musical talent and surreal wit is so enjoyable to me that a lot of my playlists are filled with these comedic songs. I cannot even begin to imagine the beautifully chaotic minds that can birth such creations, but I’m so glad that it’s a medium that exists in my life. I thought today I’d go over my four favourite musical comedians at present, and hopefully spread some of the joy they bring to me. There’s no order to this, and I’m sure that other people will have other favourites, but each person on this list has made me smile like an idiot countless times over the years.
Tim Minchin

Originally from Australia, this musical prodigy has one of the strangest minds I’ve ever witnessed. He manages to blend surreal comedy, aggressive aussie slang and incredible piano playing skills into a performance that will leave you speechless for multiple reasons. Walking the line beautifully between insulting and charming, Tim Minchin is a comedic genius. Whether he is playing with a full orchestra, reciting a beat poem on his own or creating his own broadway show, I have always enjoyed his work. As the only one on this list I have been to see live, I can also confirm that he is just as funny in person as on the screen.
Bo Burnham

Bo is an interesting mix of comedy. Like Mr Minchin, he straddles an awkwardly offensive line but can also surprise viewers with unexpected honesty that cover incredibly deep topics. You are never sure what can be expected of a Bo Burnham created piece, as it can vary from the outrageous to the artistic within a matter of beats. His performances are a spectacle, featuring voice overs and light displays that give a very unique twist to his live concerts. While some of his comedy may be more tuned for American wavelengths, I’m sure that everyone can find something to enjoy from this character.
Bill Bailey

I’m English, and therefore I think it is written in my contract somewhere that I have to love Bill Bailey. He is a national treasure, and his erratic behaviour and fluffy hair have graced our stages and screens for many years. It is very easy to forget how musically talented he is, as most of his acting roles are purely focussed on how hysterical he is, but when you put him in front of a piano he can create pure magic. Bill Bailey uses music to enhance his comedy, with the two feeding into each other and creating a perfect harmony. I hope that he cotinues to perform for many years to come, as I cannot imagine a life without his little ditties occasionally popping up.
Daniel Thrasher

The youngster of the gang, I have been blown away by Daniel Thrasher. He is a YouTube sensation, most famous for his micro-songs, and has been my favourite discovery of the pandemic. Whether performing sketches or composing five second songs, the talent of this creator is undeniable. His fingers dance across the keyboard, which is all part of why his videos are so funny to me. He clearly could be part of a band and would likely go far, but he instead makes hilarious content for the masses. His career has only just begun, but I am so excited to see where it will go in the future.
I encourage you all to check out some of the artists I’ve listed here. I know there are many more people who are just as talented that aren’t featured, but these are the people who are making me laugh the most at the moment. If you have any other suggestions of musical comedians, I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
